Steve

Steve

The warrior. Steve is sturdy, slow, and hits hard: a heavy swing, a brace or a riposte, a shoulder check or a stomp, the stance and the landslide. The one thing on his ladder that moves him is an attack.
He is still the miner, and everything the mine gives him is physical: ore torn out of the rock, veins that grow as you dig them, and a ceiling he can bring down on a room.
Starters have no tier. They have a ladder of ten upgrades, and the suit changes shape as you climb it.
Steve
Every starter begins here, at upgrade 1 of 10.

Upgrading

Hold the suit and right-click it.
No bench, no block, no keybind. The screen lists all ten upgrades, what each costs and what it unlocks.
Most upgrades let you choose what to learn, so two players can climb the same ladder and finish with different suits.

The First Upgrade

The first rung is meant to be reachable within minutes of starting a world.
Chop wood, shear a sheep, turn the wool into Fabric. That is the whole cost.
Later rungs want Reinforced Leather and Diamond Cubes, but nothing early asks for more than the overworld gives up freely.
Upgrade 1Steve
Unlocks: Luck, Ore Fortune

Upgrade 1

Given to you when you pick your starter. This rung is never crafted.
Both grow as you climb.
Upgrade 2Steve
Unlocks: Equip Hero Sword, Heavy Swing, Release
Choose one: Creeper Repellent / Magnetic Personality

Upgrade 2

Cost: 12x Oak Planks, 5x Fabric
The sword, and the first thing to do with it: for a few seconds every swing lands on everyone around you. Release is the water bucket you no longer carry.
Upgrade 3Steve
Unlocks: Backpack, Ore Sense

Upgrade 3

Cost: 8x Leather, 8x Fabric, 2x Chest
Storage, on the utility key so the numbered keys stay for fighting. Ore Sense is a quiet ping toward the nearest ore, meant to be outgrown.
Upgrade 4Steve
Unlocks: Flint and Steel
Choose one: Brace / Riposte

Upgrade 4

Cost: 6x Iron Ingot, 10x Fabric, 1x Shield
How you take a hit. Brace soaks it; Riposte hands it back to whoever you are looking at. Both are windows on the same key - the choice is a style.
Upgrade 5Steve
Unlocks: Prospector
Choose one: Shoulder Check / Quake Stomp

Upgrade 5

Cost: 12x Iron Ingot, 12x Fabric, 1x Iron Block
Prospector is yours outright: a pulse that lights up every ore around you through solid stone, and its reach grows with the suit. The choice beside it is your only burst of movement, and both are attacks: a charge into somebody, or a leap onto everybody.
Upgrade 6Steve
Unlocks: Mending, Veinminer, Stack Merger, Miner's Rhythm
Choose one: Stubborn / Unyielding

Upgrade 6

Cost: 4x Diamond, 8x Reinforced Leather, 1x Anvil
How you keep going. Veinminer takes the whole vein, Stack Merger keeps it from flooding the bag, and Miner's Rhythm makes a trip through a cave get faster the longer it lasts. The choice is which way you refuse to fall over.
Upgrade 7Steve
Unlocks: Motherlode
Choose one: Rich Vein / Lodestone / Living Furnace

Upgrade 7

Cost: 8x Diamond, 12x Reinforced Leather, 2x Diamond Cube
Motherlode: every ore Prospector can see is torn out of the rock and lands at your feet, and anything standing on that ground goes down with it. The choice beside it is how the mine keeps paying: veins that grow as you dig them, ore that comes to you, or ore that arrives already smelted.
Upgrade 8Steve
Unlocks: Explosion Immunity, Fire Immunity, Bedrock Stance

Upgrade 8

Cost: 1x Ender Chest, 4x Diamond Cube, 16x Obsidian
Both immunities, with no choice to make. The main unlock is Bedrock Stance: plant your feet and nothing moves you, but you can barely chase.
Upgrade 9Steve
Unlocks: Landslide
Choose one: Thorns / Chicken Jockey

Upgrade 9

Cost: 16x TNT, 6x Diamond Cube, 2x Netherite Scrap
Landslide is how a warrior fights something that flies. Everything caught in it is slammed to the ground and held there. The pair beside it both punish whoever hits you.
Upgrade 10Steve
Choose one: Cave-In / Primed Charge

Upgrade 10

Cost: 2x Netherite Ingot, 8x Diamond Cube, 16x Reinforced Leather
Bring the ceiling down on the room, or plant a charge and walk away. The ultimate, and the only burst on the ladder either way.
