Toby

Toby

The settler. Toby builds somewhere to come back to - smelting, farming, villagers, golems - and calls the tools for it out of thin air. He is not helpless while it grows: the pickaxe he calls up on the very first rung comes down hard at the fourth, and by the eighth he can rally everything he has built into a fight.
Starters have no tier. They have a ladder of ten upgrades, and the suit changes shape as you climb it.
Toby
Every starter begins here, at upgrade 1 of 10.

Upgrading

Hold the suit and right-click it.
No bench, no block, no keybind. The screen lists all ten upgrades, what each costs and what it unlocks.
Most upgrades let you choose what to learn, so two players can climb the same ladder and finish with different suits.

The First Upgrade

The first rung is meant to be reachable within minutes of starting a world.
Chop wood, shear a sheep, turn the wool into Fabric. That is the whole cost.
Later rungs want Reinforced Leather and Diamond Cubes, but nothing early asks for more than the overworld gives up freely.
Upgrade 1Toby
Unlocks: Night Vision, Ore Fortune, Toolkit

Upgrade 1

Given to you when you pick your starter. This rung is never crafted.
The Toolkit comes with it: open your inventory and the summoning menu is there - the same one the lanterns use, with a settler's tools behind it. Your pickaxe is its first entry, and it grows from iron to netherite as you climb. No keybind spent on it.
Upgrade 2Toby
Unlocks: Ace in the Hole
Choose one: Stack Merger / Living Furnace

Upgrade 2

Cost: 12x Oak Planks, 5x Fabric
Wood and wool. Luckier chests, and the rest of the working set: shovel, axe and a Fortune hoe join the toolkit here, and climb with the pickaxe.
Upgrade 3Toby
Unlocks: six new Toolkit entries

Upgrade 3

Cost: 8x Leather, 8x Fabric, 32x Wheat
No new power - a bigger kit. Water, torches and ladders to stay out there, and the fishing rod, shears and flint and steel that always wanted their own slot.
Tools stay out once summoned. Supplies - a bucket, a bed, a stack of cobble - come one at a time, each on its own cooldown.
Upgrade 4Toby
Unlocks: Hammerfall
Choose one: Green Thumb / Harvest Hand / Yearn for the Mines / Tunneler

Upgrade 4

Cost: 6x Iron Ingot, 10x Fabric, 1x Furnace
Hammerfall is your first real button: leap, bring the hammer down, and the ground under you is mined while everything around you is thrown off its feet. The choice beside it is what the settlement lives on - the field or the shaft.
Upgrade 5Toby
Unlocks: Villager Whisperer
Choose one: Crafting Table / Enderchest

Upgrade 5

Cost: 8x Emerald, 12x Fabric, 1x Bell
Villager Whisperer: villagers near you will have a child when you ask, for some bread. Beside it, choose a crafting table or your ender chest, wherever you are.
Upgrade 6Toby
Unlocks: Excavator Ability, Mending

Upgrade 6

Cost: 4x Diamond, 8x Reinforced Leather, 1x Anvil
Excavator bores a wide passage ahead of you, and Mending repairs your tools from the experience you pick up.
Upgrade 7Toby
Unlocks: Forge Totem
Choose one: Emerald Timer / Hero of the Village

Upgrade 7

Cost: 4x Emerald Block, 12x Reinforced Leather, 2x Diamond Cube
The Forge Totem is planted where you stand and keeps working while you do something else - healing you, your golems, your wolves and your villagers, and keeping the lot of you from burning.
Upgrade 8Toby
Unlocks: Rally, Golem Bond, Explosion Immunity, Fire Immunity

Upgrade 8

Cost: 1x Ender Chest, 4x Diamond Cube, 1x Shield
Rally calls every golem and villager you have to where you stand, sets the golems on whatever is nearest, and keeps you standing while they are beside you. Golem Bond underneath it is what makes them worth calling: yours hit harder because they are yours.
Upgrade 9Toby
Unlocks: Summon Golem, Anvil Drop
Choose one: Hold Fast / Thorns

Upgrade 9

Cost: 8x Iron Block, 6x Diamond Cube, 4x Carved Pumpkin
The Anvil Drop knocks a flying opponent out of the air. The choice beside it is how you stay upright.
Upgrade 10Toby
Choose one: Demolition / Iron Muster

Upgrade 10

Cost: 2x Netherite Ingot, 8x Diamond Cube, 16x Reinforced Leather
Take the building apart and keep the pieces, or call the guard. Demolition sets three charges where you are looking; when they go, the blocks inside drop as materials and everything standing there is thrown. Iron Muster raises several golems at once.
